For those of us of a certain age, when you see or hear the word LASER, this image from 1964 probably pops into the mind.
Of course a LASER is actually a device that emits Light through a process of optical Amplification based on the Stimulated Emission of electromagnetic Radiation.
First realised in 1960 at Hughes Labs it grew in the non-scientific world's consciousness most famously with the classic scene in the 1964 James Bond film "Goldfinger".
There still seems to be a preoccupation with "power" however as we now appreciate, this isn't it's raison d'être for all applications.
